Herwig began writing articles and gardening books. His first article was published in March 1907, and his first gardening book around 1925. Father Rob Herwig is the world's best-selling green author. Modeste worked for eight years in her father's Model Gardens in Lunteren to gain practical experience. Her first gardening book was published in 1989 by Terra Publishing House. In spring 2009, her 30th book (together with her father Rob Herwig) "Gardening according to 3 generations of Herwig" was published, a practical gardening book with knowledge from three generations of Herwig. In spring 2019, her 45th book "Plant Combinations" will be published. Garden photographer, green author, and planting specialist Modeste Herwig is a freelance photographer but also takes garden and plant photos on commission. She travels extensively both domestically and internationally to photograph gardens and plants and to follow new ideas in garden architecture. Modeste provides articles and gardening columns for various magazines such as Groei & Bloei, Tuinseizoen, Buitenleven, Eden, Tuin & Landschap, and HDC Media newspapers.
