ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER, JACOB OLIE: Jacob Olie was a pioneer in the field of photography. Photography was his hobby, as Olie was originally a carpenter, later a drawing teacher, and director of the first Dutch trade school. He likely took his first photos in the summer of 1861 with a self-built camera. During this early period, he also created this self-portrait with hat, pipe, and cane, behind a chair with his dog, against a simple background of three white boards. In the initial years, Jacob Olie couldn't venture far from home for photography. He used the so-called wet collodion process, placing a wet glass plate in the camera, which he had to develop immediately after the shot in his darkroom. Hence, during this time, Olie captured many portraits of himself and his family, as well as photos of his own neighborhood, the Western Islands. Around 1870, Jacob Olie stopped photographing. However, when he retired in 1890, he resumed his old hobby. He used the same camera but with a new lens. Olie now took his shots with dry gelatin plates, which didn't require immediate development, allowing him to photograph anywhere in the city and its surroundings. In fifteen years, Jacob Olie took over three thousand photos of rapidly changing Amsterdam.
