2019 is the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt's death. The Rijksmuseum, the Hermitage and the Rembrandthuis will all be holding special exhibitions to commemorate this anniversary. Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum
From 15 February to 10 June 2019, the Rijksmuseum will present its first retrospective exhibition of all Rembrandt's paintings, prints and drawings, from the museum's own collection. Well worth a visit, since the museum manages the largest collection of Rembrandt paintings in the world. The exhibition will provide unique insight into Rembrandt the artist, the person and the storyteller.
In July 2019, the Rijksmuseum will launch the largest ever study of The Nightwatch. The painting will be restored in full view of the public. In the fall of 2019, the Rembrandt-Velázquez exposition will be held. with masterpieces by the great masters of the 17th century: Velázquez, Rembrandt, Murillo, Vermeer, Zurbarán, Hals and Ribera. This is a unique collaboration with the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
350 years of Rembrandt in the Rembrandthuis
The Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam is the former home and studio of the artist. From 1 February to 19 May 2019, this museum will proudly present the exhibition ‘Rembrandt’s social network'. At the heart of the exhibition are Rembrant's social relationships and the role that they played in his life and work. Rembrandt actively and intentionally made use of his social network. The uniformity of all the paintings, drawings and prints is striking. The exhibition also includes work that has rarely or never been seen in the Netherlands before.
From 7 June to 1 September 2019 the exhibition ‘Inspired by Rembrandt’ will present the most outstanding work from the museum's collection. Work by artists including Rembrandt, Hercules Segers, Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso. And by others such as Horst Janssen, Willem den Ouden, Charles Donker and Glenn Brown.
From 21 September 2019 to 16 February 2020 the Rembrandthuis will be creating a laboratory-like setting. Discover how a Rembrant drawing has changed over the centuries. See what someone else added to the painting later on. And contemplate the dilemmas faced by researchers and restorers.
350 years of Rembrandt in Museum De Lakenhal
From 15 June to 3 October 2019 the Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden will be holding the exhibition ‘Rembrandt & De Gouden Eeuw’. This will include masterpieces by Leiden-born masters such Rembrandt, Jan van Goyen, Jan Steen, and the Leiden Fijnschilders (fine painters of the Leiden school). One of these is the masterpiece ‘Brillenverkoper’ (The Spectacles Salesman) by Rembrandt.
Then, from 3 November 2019 to 9 February 2020, the exhibition 'Young Rembrandt' will be held. This is a retrospective exhibition of his earliest work.
More Rembrandt
For Rembrandt-lovers, there's even more to enjoy in 2019. For instance, the Hermitage in Amsterdam, the Fries Museum (Leeuwarden) and the Mauritshuis (Den Haag) will all be holding special exhibitions.
